By the President in the Name of Congress: Arkansas' Medal of Honor Recipients

Photo of the Navy Medal of Honor on neck ribbon.Presented by the President in the name of Congress, the Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in military action that can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the United States' armed forces. The award recognizes action distinguished by gallantry “at the risk of life, above and beyond the call of duty.” Established early in the Civil War, the Medal of Honor rose to prominence in American military history. Fewer than 3,500 Americans have received the award and today approximately one hundred of them survive-two in Arkansas.

The exhibit honors the Arkansans whose service to our country has earned them the Medal of Honor. Their bravery and sacrifice exemplify the rich military heritage of our state and its citizens. Twenty-five Arkansans, from the Civil War to Vietnam, have received this highest honor. The museum is proud to have three Medals of Honor on display; those received by Nathan Gordon, Nick Bacon and Gilbert Collier.
